Killakee Estate Ruined Garden (Summer)

Just a quick reminder this week that there’s orienteering on Sunday 20th at the Hellfire Club/Massey’s Estate above Rathfarnham. Setanta Orienteers are running a local event with three courses: all the courses will run through Massey’s Estate, a lovely bit of mostly beech forest below the road, while the longest course (4.4.km) will also venture up around the Hellfire Club itself. See details here.

There’s some training for younger juniors beforehand in Massey’s Estate at 09.45 for 10.00: see the details on our Facebook page here. To make sure there are enough maps, please pre-register by e-mailing john(dot)riordan(at)boi(dot)com

Parking at Hellfire Woods can be very tight and there are often traffic jams on the road at the forest, some come early to get a place.

Well done to Cuan Riordan (3rd M14) and Frank Martindale  (1st M75) at last Sunday’s Munster Championships in Co. Tipperary, two of a small group of 3ROC who entered the event. By all accounts it was a good event, so thanks to Bishopstown OC for organising.

Advance notice: 3ROC are celebrating 40 years this year, in common with the other clubs (GEN and SET) descended directly from the original “Irish Orienteers” club. We’re having a club lunch and party for members on Sunday 11th December at the Dropping Well in Milltown, so make a note in your diary. There will be some informal orienteering beforehand to work up an appetite and individual invitations are being sent out in the coming days.

Our next event is the Christmas Score Event on St Stephen’s Day: Eoin Dunne is planning, John McCullough is organising. It will be a 50-minute score event, start time 10.30 to 12.00 only (take note!). We’ll need some helpers on the day, and if anyone can put out controls or take them in, you’ll be very welcome.

PS If you want something different this Sunday, WatO have urban orienteering at Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

See you in the forest!
