Veteran Home International team in Wales last weekend.

Three Rock Wood league event – Sunday 7th October: How nice it would be to be able to run on one of our own maps without having to worry about planning the courses, organising the event or taking in the controls! Well, that’s what’s happening this Sunday (October 7th) when our neighbouring club, Great Eastern Navigators, are borrowing the Three Rock Wood/Ticknock map to run a Leinster League event.

Pat Healy has been busy updating the map with a view to Coillte revising the permanent orienteering courses and we will benefit from the new map in time for our next event on the area on St Stephen’s Day. In the meantime we can just turn up and run. Details of the event are on the IOA Forum here.

Carlow and Malahide Castle featured last weekend, with the final Fingal Scatter event in Malahide and an urban race and a sprint in Carlow. They sound like great fun – see the results on the IOA Results page here. Our M80 Con Carroll and club Treasurer Emma McAuley finished 1st and 4th in their respective classes at Malahide, while Eoin Riordan finished 4th on the Long course in the sprint at Carlow IT.

The next 3ROC event is the following Sunday (October 14th) in the Phoenix Park: this will be the only daytime orienteering in the Park this year and only the second event there in 2018. Starts from 11 to 1 beside the Papal Cross. It’s not a league event, but more one aimed at beginners and people wanting to give orienteering a try, but current orienteers are welcome! There will be three courses of about 2, 4 and 6 km. We were revising the map this week but there aren’t many changes despite the recent storms. More details of this next week at www.3roc.net. Thanks to GEN for changing their league event from October 14th to October 7th to allow us to run this event in the Park as otherwise it clashed with the JHI’s (see below) as the course planner is on the JHI team …

Home Internationals: Good luck to the 3ROC runners at the Junior Home International in Scotland this weekend: Clodagh Moran (W18), Cuan Riordan (M16) and Aidan McCullough (M18). The team of M and W 14, 16 and 18’s travels to Pitlochry for the competition against England, Scotland and Wales. Will they manage to beat Wales, as the Senior Team did? Or will Wales pull an extraordinary performance out of the hat and beat both Scotland and Ireland, as happened at the Veteran event last weekend in Wales? 3ROC’s Mary O’Connell and John McCullough were the 3ROC reps on the Irish team for that one. Wins from Ruth Lynam (W60) and David Blair (M65) and good results from other team members weren’t enough to get Ireland out of 4th place. See the results, Routegadget and photos taken by Philip Baxter here.
