Orienteering instruction on Saturday 13th October

Welcome to all our new members and to those who have contacted us since our summer events at Farmleigh and in the Phoenix Park!

As promised, we are putting on an orienteering instruction session on Saturday 13th October from 11 to 1 pm. it would help us greatly if we know how many to expect, so that we have maps for everyone, so please let us know if you plan to come, and what your level of knowledge of orienteering is (absolute beginner/basic/have done some orienteering). Use the “Contact Us” box on the right of the web page.

Where? At Ticknock Wood/Three Rock Mountain near Dundrum. See a location map here. We’ll be using some of the permanent orienteering course maps which you can see here.

What’s on offer? We’ll have experienced orienteers from the club there to show you the basics of orienteering: explain the map, scales, symbols, vegetation, contours etc.

Depending on the level of knowledge of the group, we may also be able to cover distance judgement and basic compass work.

What about fitness? This is a navigation training session rather than a fitness workout, but if a group want to go and run with a map, that’s fine too!

What to bring? Some suitable warm clothes  for outdoor activity, plus rain gear if it looks that way (Three Rock Mtn can be exposed and cold, even if it’s only a stone’s throw from Dublin). Bring a snack too if you think you’ll be hungry, but we’ll be finished by 1 o’clock.

How to get there? See the map below.

By public transport, take the LUAS Green Line to Sandyford (beside Stillorgan reservoir) and we’ll collect you there at 10.30 – but PLEASE let us know if you need to be collected from here (use the “Contact Us” box on the right of the web page).

By car, go to the Blackglen Road (between the Lamb Doyle’s pub and Taylor’s Grange) and turn south (uphill) at Ticknock Cross.

Warning: There’s a big mountain bike event on Three Rock this weekend (mostly on Sunday) but there will be lots of people up there and parking may be tight. Don’t leave valuables visible in your car if you drive.
