Orienteering News 29th March 2017

A brief lull in the fixtures this weekend with no serious Leinster orienteering, but we have the Sprint-O event at Massy’s Estate on Saturday 8th and the Leinster Championships to look forward to on Sunday April 8th. If you haven’t entered the Leinster Championships yet, see the link here. Final entries close on 2nd April.

There is orienteering this weekend, though: North West Orienteering Club have an NI Series league event at Learmount Forest in Co. Derry on Saturday, Fermanagh Orienteers have a come and try it at the Lakeland Forum in Enniskillen and Fingal Orienteers also have a local come and try it at Blackwater Park, Navan, also on Saturday. On Sunday Sligo Orienteers have a come and try it at Finner sand dunes near Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal and Bishopstown have an event at Warrenscourt, Co. Cork. Details of these events are on the IOA website here.

Last Sunday Ajax managed another great day’s orienteering at the Bull Island in the sunshine. The best 3ROC result was Clíona McCullough winning the Green course. Congratulations to Clíona, by the way, on being awarded a Trinity “Pink”, this week, the top recognition of top-level sports performance by TCD for her performances on the hockey pitch. You can see the results, GPS traces etc here.

Well done also to Eoin McCullough on winning the Colleges’ Mountain Running Championships at Camaderry last Sunday. His TCD team also finished first in both the mens’ and women’ races. Eoin also received a Trinity “Pink” in recognition of his international orienteering achievements this week – well done! Unfortunately his exams clash with the Wicklow Way relay on 13th May … there should be a 3ROC team again this year.

Advance notice – World Orienteering Day is coming up on Wednesday May 24th: the International Orienteering Federation are hoping to get events running in parks, schools and forests all around the world on that day – read all about it here. Can you organise an event where you are?

Our next event is coming up quite soon – the next Leinster League event at Carrick, Glenealy, Co. Wicklow on Sunday April 23rd. If you can volunteer to help, contact Lindie Naughton or just e-mail us at 3rockoc@gmail.com.

This is almost your final chance to let us know if you want to run on a 3ROC team at the Irish Championships Relays on 1st May. Please e-mail 3rockoc@gmail.com. Details of the event are here. Closing date for the Individual event is 9th April. Relay entries close on April 12th but we’d like to get teams organised before that.

See you at the Junior Fundraiser sprint in Massy’s Estate, Rathfarnham on Saturday 8th April!
